Energy Efficiency in Fridges: Is a 5 Star Rating Worth It?

Confused about choosing between a 5-star fridge and a 3-star fridge? The former costs more than the latter. But there’s a catch: a 5-star fridge saves ₹480-₹600 per year compared to 3-star models. 3-star fridges consume 220-250 kWh/year – ₹1,760-₹2,000 every year at an electricity tariff of ₹8 per unit. On the other hand, 5-star fridges use around 160-175 kWh/year – ₹1,280-₹1,400 per year at the same rate. Beyond the savings, 5-star models can run for 10-15 years, while 3-star fridges may need an upgrade after 5-6 years.

Since both models help you save in one way or another, it must be confusing to choose the right one. In this guide, we’ll explain the BEE star label and what to keep in mind when buying or renting a fridge. After all, it is important to figure out whether a higher rating eventually makes sense.

What Does a Fridge’s Rating Mean?

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) grades a fridge by how much electricity it uses each year – calculated against its storage volume.

    • The fridge’s ratings range from 1 to 5 stars.
    • More stars mean lower electricity bills.
    • The label shows the consumption in kWh per year.

Remember, the star rating does not refer to a single measurement. Two 3-star fridges can still sit at opposite ends of the same band. If you want to shortlist an energy-efficient fridge, check the kWh figure.

Change in the BEE Star Rating for Fridges in 2026

BEE revised the star ratings for direct-cool and frost-free fridges; the changes are effective from 1 January 2026. Each BEE label carries a label product, the years for which the star standard applies. This matters if you are wondering whether to choose a used fridge. Check the years mentioned on the label before comparing stars.

Energy Star Rated Fridges vs. BEE 5-Star Fridges

The Energy Star mentioned on the fridge refers to the US government programme. Refrigerators in India show the BEE star label, which grades fridges from 1 to 5. For Energy Star-rated fridges in India, you should compare the BEE label.

3 Star vs. 5 Star Fridge: What’s the Difference in Power Consumption?

The difference between a 3-star and 5-star fridge lies with the specific model. Every star rating covers a band of annual consumption that scales with storage volume. The exact comparison is the kWh-per-year figure mentioned on every BEE label. You need to match more than size.

Direct-cool and frost-free fridges are rated against different BEE ratings. You cannot compare a frost-free with a direct-cool even when the stars are the same. Here’s what you need to know:

    • Choose two fridges of the same type and similar capacity
    • Note the kWh per year on every label

The main difference is what you will see in your annual savings.

Should You Choose a 3-Star Fridge?

A 3-star fridge comes in the middle of the BEE scale. It is a good choice if you’re considering a 3-star refrigerator. However, the price gap to a 5-star model is huge. The electricity tariff may be low. The lower upfront cost can outweigh the running costs. If you are comparing energy-efficient fridges for your place, you may upgrade in two years. Upgrading to a 5-star will help you save more.

Does a 5 Star Fridge Pay for Itself?

A 5-star fridge pays for itself only when its extra purchase price is smaller than the electricity it saves over the years it is used. The payback period equals the price premium divided by the annual savings, and the annual savings equals the kWh gap between the two labels multiplied by the electricity tariff per unit.

    1. Find the price premium. Compare two fridges of the same type and similar capacity, priced on the same day.
    2. Work out the units saved. Subtract the 5-star label’s kWh per year from the 3-star label’s.
    3. Convert units to rupees. Multiply the units saved by the per-unit rate on your latest electricity bill.
    4. Divide. The price premium divided by the yearly rupee saving gives the payback in years.

Use your own bill rather than a typical figure. Electricity tariffs differ by state and supplier, rise with consumption slabs, and are revised over time, so no single per-unit rate holds across India.

Is an Inverter Fridge Better Than a 5 Star Fridge?

An inverter fridge and a 5-star fridge are not alternatives. “Inverter” describes a compressor that adjusts its speed to cooling demand, while the star rating describes the fridge’s measured annual electricity use. The BEE label already reflects the compressor’s effect, so the kWh figure remains the number to compare.

A 5-star energy-rated fridge with an inverter compressor and one without are graded on the same BEE label.

Is Renting a Fridge Better When the Payback Takes Years?

Renting a fridge makes sense when the household cannot predict how long they will stay in the same place. Renting doesn’t require an upfront cost; however, your electricity bill will still depend on the rated model you choose. So, check the star rating when renting the fridge.

If you are likely to move within a year or two, you may not recover the cost of a 5-star fridge through resale. Rentomojo, a furniture and appliance rental platform, shows the fridge’s rating and includes free repairs and maintenance throughout the tenure. A lower rating means higher running costs than a 5-star model. So, for a short stay, compare the monthly rental pricing against the electricity bill and the full cost of buying.

    Final Thoughts

A 5-star fridge makes sense when you can recover its price premium through electricity savings over the years you’ll use it. A 3-star model is the better value when the premium is large, the tariff is low, or the stay is short. The kWh figures on two same-size BEE labels settle the choice.

The best energy-rated fridge on the shelf isn’t automatically the cheapest one to own. Do the sum once, with two real labels and your last electricity bill in front of you, and the right energy efficiency fridge for your home usually becomes obvious.
